Fresh Zealand Long and Efficient Service Medal Awarded for 16 years continuous or 20 years non consecutive service in the Volunteer and Lasting Militia Forces of New Zealand. Fresh Zealanders served in coastal motor launches, the Royal Naval Air Service, The Royal Naval Divisions, the Royal Naval armored Vehicle Service and ships throughout the Royal Navy many young Fresh Zealanders performed with immense distinction in the sea war of World War One, as well as many who unfortunately perished. In March 1981 commissioned officers became eligible after 15 years service, provided at minimum twelve of those were served in the ranks. Those who qualified for both were awarded both of these awards were given the first star they competent for, with a clasp in respect of the second star.

He was then appointed Naval Officer in Charge, Auckland and promoted to Commodore in 1957, the year he retired from the service. He joined the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy in 1921 where he was sent to the United Kingdom to undertake torpedo training
