What you should know about Pathways (Hamilton)
Every day in everything we do, we are guided by some important values and beliefs. Recovery is a process people undertake to work out how to manage and live with mental illness. We believe shared stories of success can capture hearts and minds and inspire people in their recovery. Peer support workers have had specialist training in how to use their experience of mental illness to help others on their recovery journey.
We are intensely proud of the journey we have taken in shaping our organisation and the mental health sector. Peer support specialists offer a unique understanding and relationship with the people who use Tupu Ake, as they too have experience of mental illness and have had training in how to use their experiences to support others on their recovery journey. At Pathways we work alongside people experiencing mental illness on their journey towards recovery. With my eating goal achieved, I was able to focus on the second goal, to learn some cooking skills.
Pathways people have something in common they all share a drive to do things differently and to be innovative. I have been involved in many parts of mental health over 20 years and as time goes on I am more and more committed to believing that we need to do whatever it takes’ for people to live their dreams. Originally trained as an occupational therapist, I spent many years’ in leadership roles across the mental health and social services sectors in NZ and the UK. It’s been really exciting to see Pathways moving more into working with young people in recent years, helping them gain skills of resiliency and wellbeing, so hopefully they never need to enter adult mental health and addiction services. I joined Pathways in 2013 following many years’ experience in youth, mental health and employment service roles.
I have worked in mental health for over 16 years, working my way up through NGO and DHB positions, into leadership roles. I loved the health sector and wanted to make an even bigger difference in the wellbeing of people. I came to Pathways following over 15 years working as a psychologist and manager in mental health and primary health services for community NGOs. It’s great to be an integral part of an organisation continually striving to make things better for their staff, people supported and their communities, and promoting and driving positive change and development in the mental health sector.
After 16 years working in the mental health sector as a registered social worker and in leadership roles, I joined Pathways in 2004 as its values were consistent with mine. As a registered nurse, I have worked across a wide range of services within the mental health and addictions sector in the UK and NZ for almost 22 years. I look forward to working proactively with the local community to support people to have the strength and resilience to live the lives they want to. Peter’s journey has seen him start setting and achieving goals and reconnecting with his family. We're passionate about supporting people with experience of mental illness or addictions we’ve been dedicated to it for more than 25 years.
Our dream is to create mental health and wellbeing opportunities that enable people to live their dreams and flourish’. At Pathways we are inspired by the recovery stories of the people who use our services. Pathways saw the need for a different model of care in the mental health sector
